The most surprising thing about my internship was how fast it went. I can't believe that it went by so fast. However, I was able to contribute a lot to the field trip program. I also was able to cover for an educator when she was sick, as well as take over a lot of the teaching so as to give my mentor more time to send emails and such. I made a lot of progress in this internship. I was able to quickly learn how to keep the kids attention, learned several ways for getting students to behave, learned how to make demonstration on the fly, learned how to be a kids friend in thirty seconds, and how to give a presentation that I know nothing about. These are all skills I wasn't necessarily taught, but by being around people who do this everyday, I learned quickly. The experience went different than I thought in that I enjoyed it way more than I anticipated. I also spent more time teaching and less time working on my robot than I expected. However, these are good things, as it turns out. I did not really have goals as I went into my internship, but my accomplishments were learning that I love teaching, helping the powerhouse with heavy lifting, and learning how to work with kiddos better. My challenges were few and far between. It was hard at first to start the lessons, but walking around while squatting and acting goofy always makes you less uncomfortable right?
These two photos are a great representation of my last days at the POW. I was feeling much more confidant in my helping and being helped, and I was willing to be myself. The letter was written by a student that I taught about solids, liquids, gases, and non-Newtonian fluids. This time has been great and I hope to work there as much as possible this summer.
My internship is still going awesome. I am working with the kids more and more, especially now that I am learning how to be excited and engaged everyday with them. It has been hard to get the enthusiasm after having done the same thing, but I am still going strong. I also think that the more that I practice, the easier it will be. I also have been enjoying making and playing with the kids in the ublick. It has been super gross and fun. The hardest thing has been sometimes I do not have much to do in the afternoons, but I am able to either clean the Maker Lab, work on my LINK project, or to go with Sarah to an after school visit, which was super fun. I was able to take a EV3 TR3X with and play with the students with him, and that was quite simply a blast. My only regret is that I only have one week left at the POW.
My internship is going great. We have been working with field trips everyday and I am getting much better at interacting with the students. I also am learning better how to work with a team who is as excited about their work as I am. This has been pleasant and I am excited to see where it will lead. My project plan is also going quite well. I am planning on doing the morning of my day with the kids as the building and programming on the ROV3R, and then in the afternoon working on importing and programming the WATCHGOOS3. This will be interesting because the kids will have never done programming. I am think that I could teach it as a if then statement. This will teach the kids the idea of SM's, and will help them to do better all around. I think that this will be a huge hit. My only regret is that I will not be working with seasoned programmers and will not be teaching the finer aspects of the EV3 software, such as My Blocks and other such things.
This is the perfect fit for me!!! It is so fun to work with the small kids, and I love my mentor and my coworkers. The Powerhouse is super fun and engaging, and I can't wait to see what else will happen here! Sarah said that we are creating a new field trip tomorrow, and I am excited to help with that. My favorite part of the day was when I got to work with first graders making and perfecting Rube Gold Burgs. They remind me of me. Except smaller. So full of energy and great idea's, they are just scared to share them with the world. We will soon cure them of that!! In conclusion, day one, EPIC success!!! Thanks Janea!!
